Water Conservation

"Keep our Winter Garden Growing. Water Conservation is at the root."

  • Water less in cooler months (November–March) water every 7-14 days. With cooler weather there is less evaporation. Turn off automatic watering systems and wait for signs that water is needed.
  • Water when grass shows signs of distress (bluish-gray color/folded leaf blades). Do not water again until symptoms reappear.
  • If rain is predicted within the next 24 hours, don’t irrigate.
  • Use a rain gauge to measure rainfall volume. This will help to determine how much water to apply.
  • When needed apply no more than ½” to ¾” of water.
  • Use the “can method” to determine how much to water. Place five to seven wide mouthed, flat-bottom cans (tuna cans work well) throughout the area. Water for 30 minutes and then measure the depth of water in each can. Average the measurements and use this number to determine how long to water.

Did you know...

  • Water use in Florida is forecast to increase from 5.1 billion gallons per day in 2000 to 9.5 billion gallons per day in 2020!!!
  • In Florida the population grows 450 people per day with over 450 acres of forested or vegetated land is cleared (twice the rate of Brazil’s rain forest).
Water Conservation is everybody's business.
